What Are ESO Seasons?

Starting in 2026, ESO moved away from the traditional yearly Chapter model and adopted a Seasons structure. Each ESO Season is a three-month content cycle that runs four times per year, delivering new zones, storylines, systems and quality-of-life improvements on a rolling schedule.

Every Season includes:

  • A fresh Tamriel Tome with free and premium reward tracks
  • A rotation of Gold Coast Bazaar items purchasable with Trade Bars
  • Base game patches that go live on all platforms at the same time
  • New gameplay content free for all base game owners

The biggest difference from the old Chapter model is flexibility. ESO Seasons are designed to respond more quickly to player feedback rather than follow a fixed annual formula. The development team can test experimental content like the Night Market Event Zone, adjust systems between updates and deliver a wider variety of features across the year.

How ESO Seasons and Updates Work Together

Each Season spans roughly one major base game Update plus mid-season patches. Not everything launches on the same day. Features roll out across the full three-month window.

Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk launches April 2, 2026 and Season 1 will follow directly after.

What Changed for ESO Players in 2026

The shift to Seasons brought several structural changes beyond the content model itself:

  • Daily Login Rewards and Endeavors were removed and replaced by the Tamriel Tome challenge system
  • Event Tickets were converted into Trade Bars at a rate of 1 ticket to 100 Trade Bars
  • ESO Plus subscribers received new perks including monthly Premium Tome Tokens and doubled Antiquity lead timers
  • Four classic DLCs are now permanently part of the base game: Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood. These have also been removed from the Crown Store.
  • The Warden class is free for all players

For a full breakdown of what changed and what it means for your account, see the Returning to ESO Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from other players
Is ESO Season content free?
Yes. All major gameplay content in an ESO Season is free for base game owners. This includes new zones, storylines, systems and quality-of-life updates. The only paid element is the optional premium track on each Tamriel Tome that only includes cosmetics.
What is the difference between ESO Chapters and Seasons?
Chapters were large yearly expansions that required separate purchase. Seasons are three-month content cycles that run four times per year, with all gameplay content free for base game owners. ESO replaced the Chapter model with Seasons starting in 2026.
