Key Highlights of ESO Update 48
- New Zone: Eastern Solstice, accessible after the server-wide event.
- The Writhing Wall Event: A unique, server-wide cooperative event that unlocks the Eastern Solstice zone.
- PVP Vengeance Tests: Updates to the Vengeance campaign with new loadout and perk system.
- Quality of Life (QoL) Updates: Bug fixes and minor adjustments.
A New Vision from New Leadership
The ESO team is undergoing a "transition period" with significant leadership changes, including Jo Burba as Studio Head, Susan Kath as Executive Producer and Nick Giacomini as the new Game Director.
Additionally, Brian Wheeler has taken on the role of Combat & PvP Director, with Jason Barnes and Mike Finnigan as Associate Design Directors. Their collective vision is to experiment with new content, listen closely to player feedback, and reconnect with the game's rich lore.
PvP Vengeance Tests
The team is making some serious moves to improve PvP with the Vengeance tests leading the charge. The goal here is to reduce lag, improve performance, and bring Cyrodiil back to a state of "massive PvP warfare." This is a long-term project based directly on player feedback.
- Vengeance 47 (September 22nd-29th): This test will re-introduce skill lines, including Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, and a combined Armor skill line. Achievements, titles, and mount selection will be turned on as well. The Meatbag Catapult also returns (without lingering effects though)!
- Vengeance 48 (December 3rd-8th): This test introduces Loadouts (pre-set builds for quick swapping) and Perks (lightweight passive abilities) offering greater build variety.
- Vengeance 49 (sometime 2026): A future test will focus on balancing damage output vs. healing output, potentially by upping the cap on damage abilities.
Notable Combat Bug Fixes & Adjustments in ESO Update 48
Beyond the major content, players can look forward to various quality-of-life improvements. These changes are designed to address top player pain points and make the combat feel smoother.
- Potions, food and drink can now be used while channeling or casting abilities
- Whirlwind and Steel Tornado are gaining a very minor execute damage effect, up to 33% bonus damage to targets under 50% Health
- Anthelmir's Construct is getting a change made to help reduce its burst potential, changing its proc condition from completing a fully charged Heavy Attack to dealing damage with one instead
- Fix for Werewolf Berserker's AoE Heavy Attack where it previously gained 2750 flat damage that was unlisted in the tooltip. To attempt to offset this (as it'd be a nerf) it now deals full damage of the base Heavy Attack, instead of half damage.
- Arcanist's Class Mastery script + Banner Bearer is being fixed to no longer generate Ultimate outside of combat
- Fix for Restoration Light Attacks where they could be treated as healing in some cases
- Swimming now properly removes all effects of Crouch and Invisibility, to prevent some weird bugs and exploits
- Monomyth Reforged (the Mythic item) now properly works while Sprinting, and no longer dismounts your character if you enter combat while mounted
Additionally, leaderboards outside of Cyrodiil will be changed to be account-based, which should give more players a chance to get on the boards!
Eastern Solstice: A New Zone
Once your server shatters the Writhing Wall, the new Eastern Solstice zone becomes accessible. This area is a direct continuation of the Western Solstice story, with a darker, more grave atmosphere heavily influenced by Coldharbour and the Worm Cult.
Quests in Eastern Solstice will offer more player interaction and choices, potentially changing outcomes, with many callbacks to previous content and characters, especially from Coldharbour.
Want to play the previous stories in order? Check out our updated ESO Chronological Timeline Guide.
Eastern Solstice includes:
- Quests with multiple endings and outcomes based on your past in-game actions, with a lot more player interaction to “shape the quest itself.”
- 3 New World bosses
- New Public Dungeon: Calindvale Gardens
- New Delves
The update will also add New Crown Store Homes: Druid Spring Conservatory and Cradle of the Worm Colossus sometime after ESO Update 48 release.
Our interactive map will be updated to include Eastern Solstice: The Elder Scrolls Online Interactive Map
The Writhing Wall: A Community-Driven Event
Writhing Wall Event Phase 3 on The Public Test Server (PTS) will feature the Writhing Fortress. In the stream we learned that the Writhing Fortress is described as a "pseudo kind of instance" or "public dungeon" where players will need to work together to figure out how to break through without extensive handholding, encountering big monsters along the way.
For a more detailed guide on how to participate, the different phases, and the rewards, check out our Writhing Wall guide!
