Running out of inventory space is one of the most common frustrations in Elder Scrolls Online. This guide covers every method available to expand your bag and bank storage, including the major cost reductions introduced in Update 49.

If you are new to ESO, check out the ESO beginner guide for a full overview of core systems before diving in.

Inventory Basics

New characters start with 60 inventory slots. A fully upgraded character can reach 200 slots. The bank starts at 60 slots and caps at 240. ESO Plus subscribers double that bank cap to 480.

There are three ways to increase your storage:

  1. Bag upgrades (directly from UI)
  2. Mount carry capacity training (Stablemasters)
  3. Bank upgrades (Bank UI)

Each works differently and costs gold.

Character Bag Upgrades

Bag upgrades are character-specific. Each new character you create starts at 60 slots and requires its own upgrade investment.

Starting in Update 49, you can also upgrade your bag directly from the inventory screen. A new "Upgrade Bag Space" button appears at the bottom of the inventory UI.

Update 49 also cut bag upgrade costs by nearly 50%. The full upgrade now costs 100,000 gold, down from 179,700.

Bag upgrade New cost Old cost
1. 6070 400 400
2. 7080 1,400 2,000
3. 8090 4,200 5,900
4. 90100 9,000 11,000
5. 100110 12,000 19,200
6. 110120 18.000 30,700
7. 120130 23,000 46,000
8. 130140 32.000 64,500
Total Cost: 100,000 179,700

Pack Merchant Locations

Pack Merchants still exist throughout the world. If you prefer to visit one in person, here are the locations for each alliances beginner zones.

  1. Aldmeri Dominion: Vulkhel Guard in Auridon. The Pack Merchant is inside one of the buildings near the docks. View on map
  2. Daggerfall Covenant: Daggerfall in Glenumbra. The Pack Merchant stands outside in the central area of the town. View on map
  3. Ebonheart Pact: Davon's Watch in Stonefalls. The Pack Merchant is outside near the market area. View on Map

Bank Upgrades

Bank upgrades are account-wide. You pay once and all characters benefit. Because of this, the total cost is higher than character bag upgrades, but you only do it once.

Update 49 reduced bank upgrade costs by nearly 50%. The full upgrade now costs 400,000 gold, down from 768,500. ESO Plus subscribers continue to receive doubled bank space, pushing the maximum from 240 to 480 slots.

Note: Confirmed per-tier bank costs are not yet available. Update 49 reduces the total cost to fully upgrade your bank from 768,500 gold to 400,000 gold. We will update this table with confirmed figures once the patch goes live on March 9, 2026.

Bank Upgrade Cost (Gold)
70 1.000
80 3.300
90 6.800
100 11.400
110 20.500
120 28.300
130 32.700
140 37.500
150 42.000
160 45.000
170 50.000
180 55.000
190 60.000
200 65.000
210 70.000
220 75.000
230 80.000
240 (Max Upgrade) 85.000
Total 768.500

To purchase bank upgrades, visit any banker. Select the "Buy Bank Space" option at the bottom of the banking interface.

Mount Carry Capacity

Mount training adds carry capacity on top of your bag upgrades. Each point invested in carry capacity adds one permanent inventory slot to that character. You can invest up to 60 points, pushing your total character inventory from 140 to 200.

Mount training is character-specific. Every character you create needs its own training investment. Visit any Stablemaster in towns to train your mount.

Mount Upgrade Maximum Daily Gold Cost Total Gold
Speed 60 500 10,000
Stamina 60 500 10,000
Carry Capacity 60 500 10,000

Starting in Update 49, each training session now grants three upgrades instead of one. The 20-hour daily cooldown is unchanged, so you still train once per day, but each visit is three times as effective. This reduces the time to max carry capacity from 60 days to 20 days.

One important note: Crown Riding Lessons were not changed. They still grant only a single upgrade per use.

For a full breakdown of mount systems including gold mounts added in Update 49, visit the ESO mounts guide.

You can check your progress on your mount in your character sheet. This is once again character based, you will have to repeat this process on every character that you create.
