Respeccing in ESO is free, fast, and available to every player directly in the UI. You can reset your attribute points and skills at any time with no gold cost, so there is no reason to feel locked into an early build decision.
This guide covers how to respec in Elder Scrolls Online, what restrictions apply and where to find cure vampirism and lycanthropy.
What are Attribute Points, Skills, Morphs and Passives
Attribute Points are distributed across Magicka, Health and Stamina on your character sheet (press C on PC). They are one of the core decisions in any ESO build and they can be changed freely at any time.
Skills are your active abilities in the Skills menu. As you level a skill you unlock morphs, which are two upgraded versions of the ability where you pick one. Passives are permanent bonuses tied to your skill lines. A skill respec resets all of these at once so you can start fresh.
Champion Points are a separate system for veteran players. They are not part of the standard respec and are covered below. If you are new to the game, the ESO new player guide is a good place to start before diving into build decisions.
How to Respec Skills and Attributes in ESO for Free
Since Update 49, respeccing is completely free and done directly in the UI. No shrine visit, no gold cost, no scrolls required.
How to respec skills, morphs and passives:
- Open the Skills menu
- Press the respec keybind shown on screen
- Reassign your skills, morphs and passives
- Confirm your changes
- Wait for the short cooldown to reset before making further changes
How to respec attribute points:
- Open your Character screen (press C on PC)
- Press the respec keybind shown on screen
- Redistribute your Magicka, Health and Stamina points
- Confirm your changes
- Wait for the short cooldown to clear while the server updates
- You can go straight back in and adjust again once it resets
What Happened to Respec Scrolls?
Respec Scrolls are no longer sold in the Crown Store. Any scrolls still in your inventory can be sold to a vendor for gold. With the free UI respec now in place, scrolls have no practical use and are safe to clear out of your bags.
What About Champion Points?
Champion Points cannot currently be respecced through the free UI system. ZOS considered including them in the Update 49 changes but did not have time to address the complexity involved. It remains on their radar for a future update with no confirmed timeline.
For a full breakdown of how Champion Points work, see the Champion Points beginner guide or the Champion Points wiki on eso-hub.
Rededication Shrines: Locations and When to Use Them
The rededication shrines are still in the game but are now primarily useful for curing Vampirism and Lycanthropy. Respeccing skills and attributes no longer requires a shrine visit. For the full cure process, see the guides on becoming a vampire and becoming a werewolf.
There is one shrine in each alliance capital.
| Alliance | City | Zone |
| Ebonheart Pact | Mournhold | Deshaan |
| Aldmeri Dominion | Elden Root | Grahtwood |
| Daggerfall Covenant | Wayrest | Stormhaven |
Ebonheart Pact Respec Location
The Ebonheart Pact rededication shrine is located in Mournhold, the capital city of the Deshaan zone. Teleport to the Mournhold Wayshrine and head to the city center. You will find the Rededication Shrines grouped together, where you can cure Vampirism and Lycanthropy.
Aldmeri Dominion Respec Location
The Aldmeri Dominion rededication shrine is located in Elden Root, the capital city of the Grahtwood zone. Teleport to the central Elden Root Wayshrine and the Rededication Shrines are visible immediately nearby, making this the easiest shrine to locate of the three.
Daggerfall Covenant Respec Location
The Daggerfall Covenant rededication shrine is located in Wayrest, the capital city of the Stormhaven zone. Teleport to the Wayrest Wayshrine and walk west. You will find the Rededication Shrines inside the building on that side of the city.
Respec Restrictions: When You Cannot Respec
The free UI respec is blocked in three situations:
- In active combat. Exit combat first, then respec.
- In Vengeance. The PvP penalty state blocks the option entirely.
- In most leaderboard content. The exception is Infinite Archive, where respeccing remains available.
These restrictions exist to prevent mid-encounter build swapping. If the option is greyed out, leave the restricted situation and try again.
Respec with armory
If you want to save multiple loadouts without respeccing each time, the Armory system guide covers exactly how to set that up.
