How to become a Werewolf in ESO Guide

Welcome to the ESO Werewolf Guide on How to become a Werewolf. This is a guide to help you become a Werewolf and to find out all the different ways you can become one in ESO!

Table of contents

6 Chapters

Becoming a Werewolf in ESO means contracting Lycanthropy, also known as Sanies Lupinus, an affliction that unlocks the Werewolf skill line and its abilities.

Once infected, a short quest called Hircine's Gift progresses the disease to full Lycanthropy. Update 49 overhauled the entire process, adding dedicated NPC quest givers, new shrine locations and free Crown Store cures, so you no longer need to beg for a bite in zone chat.

If you're weighing up Werewolf against Vampirism, see the Becoming a Vampire guide before you commit since you can only have one affliction active at a time.

Daggerfall Covenant Glenumbra  View on map
Ebonheart Pact Stonefalls  View on map

Auridon Werewolf Shrine

The Werewolf Shrine is located on the North-West coast of Auridon, a little west of Greenwater Wayshrine. Firralthel is here to start Hircine's Gift and players can bite each other. View on map

Glenumbra Werewolf Shrine

The Werewolf shrine is located on the North-East coast of Glenumbra just north of Hag Fen Wayshrine. Firralthel can grant you the lycantrophy curse and players can bite you here. View on map

Stonefalls Werewolf Shrine

The Werewolf Shrine is located on the middle of the map, just east of Sulfur Pools Wayshrine. Same setup as the others: Firralthel at the shrine, player bites supported, map icon visible once discovered. View on map

Old Werewolf Shrine Locations

The old Shrines where you complete your quest can be found in the following zones:

How to Become a Werewolf in ESO

There are three ways to get infected with Lycanthropy. All three work in Update 49.

The easiest method as of Update 49. Travel to any new shrine in Auridon, Glenumbra or Stonefalls and speak to Firralthel to pick up Hircine's Gift directly. No player bite needed, no Crown Store purchase required.

  1. Travel to a new shrine in Auridon, Glenumbra or Stonefalls
  2. Speak to Firralthel to pick up Hircine's Gift
  3. Follow the quest to the original shrine location and complete it
  4. You're now a Werewolf

A free Quest Starter is also available in the Crown Store for first-time players if you'd rather begin from there.

Player Bite

Player bites still work and are available at both old and new shrines. The biting player needs the Bloodmoon passive unlocked in their Werewolf skill line and must perform the bite at a shrine location.

Once bitten, you'll receive the Sanies Lupinus debuff. Pick up Hircine's Gift from a nearby Wayshrine to start the quest.

Asking in zone chat near the shrine zones still works, and many players will do it for free.

Werewolf NPC Bite

Special Werewolf NPCs spawn in Bangkorai, The Rift and Reaper's March during a full moon. The regular werewolves cannot infect you

Returning Players: Instant Re-Acquisition

If you've completed Hircine's Gift before and cured yourself since, you don't need to repeat the quest. Speak to Firralthel at any of the new shrines and you can regain the Werewolf skill line immediately.

How Cure Lycanthropy

Speak to Prelate Sabinus to cure Lycanthropy (and Vampirism). He's found in Mages Guildhalls and religious sites across Tamriel.

  1. "Buy" a free instant Cure from the Crown Store
  2. Talk to Prelate Sabinus in any Mages Guild Hall and pay 69 gold to cure Lycantrophy

Where to Cure Lycanthropy

You can't be both a Vampire and a Werewolf at the same time. Cure your current affliction before pursuing the other.

Werewolf Visual Refresh

A full Werewolf visual overhaul is confirmed for later in Season Zero, separate from the Update 49 launch on March 9. The base Werewolf model is getting higher-fidelity visuals, and a female Werewolf model is being added to the game for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from other players
Can I be both a Werewolf and a Vampire at the same time?
No. You can only have one affliction active at a time. If you want to switch, cure your current condition first then pursue the other.
Do I need any DLC to become a Werewolf?
No. Lycanthropy and the Werewolf skill line are base game content available to all players.
Does it matter which alliance I am when picking a shrine?
No. As of One Tamriel, you can travel to any shrine regardless of your alliance. Pick whichever is most convenient.
Can I become a Werewolf on multiple characters?
Yes. Lycanthropy is per character, not account-wide. Each character needs to go through the infection and quest process separately. If you have a friend with the Bloodmoon passive, they can bite one character per week per shrine visit.
How often can a player bite someone
Once per week. The Bloodmoon passive allows you to infect one other player per week by returning to a Werewolf ritual site.
What happens to my skill points if I cure Lycanthropy
Your skill points invested in the Werewolf skill line are refunded when you cure. Your skill line progression and XP are saved, so if you become a Werewolf again later you won't need to re-earn those levels, though you will need to re-allocate your skill points into the abilities.
Will I lose my Werewolf skill line progress permanently if I cure?
No. XP earned and morph progression are preserved. The skill line simply becomes inactive until you're infected again.
Can I use the Armory to switch between Werewolf and Vampire builds?
Yes. You can save a Werewolf build and a Vampire build in separate Armory slots. Swapping between them handles the affliction state and skill point allocation automatically.
Do Werewolf skills count as criminal acts?
Some do. Werewolf Transformation, Pounce, Hircine's Bounty, Roar, Piercing Howl and Infectious Claws are all flagged as criminal acts in the skill data, meaning using them in view of witnesses in civilised areas will generate a bounty.
Can I infect a player who is already a Vampire?
No. Players with Noxiphilic Sanguivoria (Vampirism) active cannot be infected with Lycanthropy.
What is the female Werewolf model and when is it coming?
A visual overhaul of the Werewolf model is confirmed for Season Zero, including a female Werewolf variant being added to the game for free. This is separate from the Update 49 launch on March 9 and is expected in June, though an exact date hasn't been confirmed.
Is being a Werewolf worth it?
It depends on your build. Werewolf is a strong choice for Stamina-based PvE and PvP builds. While transformed, you replace your regular skill bars with the Werewolf skill line, so success depends on managing transformation uptime.
