Why Update 35 is Bad News for Werewolves in ESO

Why Update 35 is Bad News for Werewolves in ESO

In the Elder Scrolls Online you can become a Werewolf, unlocking various new skills and the ability to transform into Werewolf form. Besides just being a thematic build option for players who like werewolves, they have also traditionally been powerhouses in PvP in the right hands, while also being viable (but some margin short of meta) in PvE.

However, the changes outlined by Zenimax for the Lost Depths update could spell some trouble for Werewolf players in ESO.

Werewolf Troubles in ESO Lost Depths

First of all, if you play werewolf at a fairly casual level, just doing quests or perhaps some of the easier dungeons, then these changes aren't going to really affect you much at all, so you don't need to worry about it.

However, if you are someone who is trying to get the most out of the Werewolf skill line to push DPS in PvE or dominate battlefields in PvP, then you are almost certainly going to notice the changes.  There are two changes that will be most impactful for werewolves in Lost Depths, and they are not actually direct changes to the Werewolf skill line itself.

The first change is the substantial nerf to Light Attack damage to a flat value, outlined in the PTS patch notes. About 20% of werewolves' DPS potential comes from their light attacks (not including the extra bleed that comes from Werewolf Berserker) so this is going to impact them more heavily than many other playstyles.

Next up is the nerf to the Oakensoul Ring. This item was perfectly suited to Werewolves because they can only utilize one bar of skills when in werewolf form anyway, so they got all the benefits from the Mythic with none of the drawbacks. It may no longer be worth running this Mythic on a Werewolf, especially if you are playing in a group and picking up some of the buffs that Oakensoul gives you from other sources.

What Else is Changing for Werewolves?

To make matters worse, there is also a nerf to the Infectious Claws skill and its morphs. While the duration has been increased, the damage per second has been reduced by 17%. The Claws of Life morph has also had its healing reduced by 34% because the developers felt that its ability to heal you by hitting multiple targets (the ability currently heals you for an amount equivalent to all the damage that it deals to enemies) was causing werewolves to be able to heal too much when outnumbered.

Personally I think a better solution to that would have been to leave the heal unchanged in single target situations, but reduce the heal gained from hitting subsequent targets.

So are werewolves getting any good news at all? The Claws of Anguish skill will now dish out the Diseased status effect on all damage rather than just the initial hit. This probably wasn't the buff you were hoping for to make up for these nerfs.

Really the only thing that Werewolves seem to have going for them in the next patch is that the light attack bleed from Werewolf Berserker is not getting nerfed in the same way that most other DoTs in the game are.

We can expect the first round of major changes to the Lost Depths PTS to be announced on Monday, so perhaps the situation will improve then for werewolves in ESO.
