Beginning on March 9th, ESO Update 49 removes the gold cost for respeccing Skills and Attributes and integrates full respec functionality directly into the in game UI.

What’s Changing in ESO Update 49

With Update 49 (March 9), respeccing becomes faster, simpler and completely free! These changes supports the “play your way” philosophy by letting you change your characters skills/attributes as often as you want without having to pay gold.

Changes include:

  • Respeccing available directly through the UI
  • Skill and Attribute respecs are free (includes subclasses)
  • No shrine visit required
  • Small cooldown after confirming changes

You can still use respec shrines at 0 gold cost.

How to Respec in ESO After Update 49

Respeccing is now integrated into the core character menus. How it works:

  • Open the Character screen to respec Attributes
  • Open the Skills screen to respec Skill points
  • Press the "Respec X" to enter respec mode
  • Reassign points as you want
  • Confirm your changes
  • Wait for the short cooldown before respeccing again

For a full breakdown of all respec options, shrine locations and Champion Points, see our complete How to Respec Skills and Attributes in ESO guide.

Where You Can't Respec

While ESO Update 49 makes respeccing completely free, some limitations remain in place.

You cannot respec:

  • While actively in combat
  • In timed or leaderboard content (with one exception: the Infinite Archive)
  • While in a Vengeance Campaign

This means you can now respec in the middle of Cyrodiil, Dungeons, at the entrance of Veteran Trials etc.

What Happens to Crown Store Respec Scrolls

With free UI respeccing becoming permanent, Respec Scrolls are being phased out of their paid function.

Changes to Respec Scrolls:

  • Removed from the Crown Store
  • Existing scrolls will become sellable to vendors for 300 gold a piece

Existing scrolls can still be used, but you will likely benefit more from selling them for gold unless you prefer to keep them as relics of a bygone system.
