The Hidden Trick to Master Lockpicking in ESO
By Andrew | 7 Jul 2022 |Lockpicking is one of the most useful skills in the Elder Scrolls Online, and even if you don't do any stealing at all, you will still need to do quite a bit of lockpicking as there are many locked treasure chests hidden in overland zones and dungeons throughout the game.
It's however quite easy to fail lockpicking sometimes especially on the Advanced and Master locks where you have a tight time pressure to successfully complete the lockpicking. This can be slightly embarrassing if you are in a dungeon or trial group with several players waiting on you to open the chest.
It turns out that there is a trick to lockpicking that you probably didn't know about, which makes the process much easier.
The Hidden Lockpicking Trick in ESO
Normally when you are lockpicking in the Elder Scrolls Online, you push down on each tumbler and wait until it begins to vibrate, and then release it. On the harder locks, this can happen quite quickly making it easy to accidentally push too far, causing the tumbler to bounce back up. This loses time and can break the lockpick if you do it too many times. However, there is a completely different visual cue that you can utilize to make the lockpicking process easier. Rather than watching the tumblers inside the lockpick and waiting for the vibration, you can instead watch the part of the lockpick that remains outside the keyhole. When you are pushing down on the tumbler, this part of the lockpick initially moves straight downwards. But at the same time as the tumbler begins to vibrate (signifying that it's time to let go of the lockpick) this part of the lockpick will rotate slightly and start to move back upwards.
If the difference is too subtle for you to see from these pictures alone, then here is a video which should make it clearer what is happening (credit to Peritye for making it):
Give this a try for yourself next time you are lockpicking, as quite a lot of players on the Reddit post where this was initially shared reported that it made lockpicking much easier for them. Credit again goes to Peritye for the Reddit post.
