Is Shadow Silk an Underrated Skill in ESO?

The Undaunted  skill line in ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) contains a selection of skills that are geared towards team play in PvE content, with some of its most notable skills being Inner Fire which acts as a ranged taunt, and Necrotic Orb which does AOE damage while also giving allies a synergy that restores health or stamina.

Today though we are having a look at a much less popular skill in that skill line, the Shadow Silk skill.

Shadow Silk is first and foremost an AOE skill that will do an initial hit of damage at the target location. A web with some bugs running around on it will then appear in the same place, and after 10 seconds it explodes, doing additional damage. The damage from this part of the skill isn't terrible, but normally there are just better options for damage dealers and using the skill in a rotation can be quite clunky, so the skill doesn't see that much use.

However one part of the skill that if often overlooked is the synergy that it gives to its allies. All of the skills in the Undaunted skill tree give synergies since they are all aimed at group play, and Shadow Silk is no different.

When you cast the skill, a ranged ally (which really just refers to the distance of allies from you, not to their build) can activate the Black Widows synergy, which will summon a pet spider to attack the enemy for 10 seconds.

The spiders will bite enemies to deal a fairly small amount of physical damage, but what's good about these spiders is the poison DoT that they can put on enemies. On a DPS spec with raid buffs we got a tooltip value of 25,380 damage over 10 seconds from this, which is quite a nice boost to damage.

So is it worth using Shadow Silk?

The answer to this is probably "it depends". If you currently have a skill slotted that you aren't finding very useful, then it might be worth trying Shadow Silk. It won't boost your own personal damage by much, if at all, but the DoT from the summoned spiders can give a fairly decent boost to your team's group DPS. More group DPS is something that pretty much nobody is going to complain about.
