What Are Dynamic Encounters in ESO

Dynamic Encounters in ESO are area-based, multi-stage events that spin up in existing overland zones. They sit somewhere between large public encounters like Dark Anchors and the smaller scripted moments players stumble across while exploring.

What defines a Dynamic Encounter:

  • Story-driven: Each encounter has its own narrative, not just a wave of enemies
  • Multi-stage: Several stages with different objectives, not a single fight
  • Unique map icon: Only appears when the encounter is active, similar to Dark Anchors and Dragons
  • Auto-join: Players are automatically added when they walk into the radius
  • Not combat-only: The design specifically avoids the "kill, kill, kill, then kill a boss" structure of older world events in The Elder Scrolls Online

How ESO Dynamic Encounters Work

Each ESO Dynamic Encounter runs through several stages. A progress bar appears in the top right of the screen, in the same spot as the quest tracker, so players can see how close they are to finishing the current stage.

Stage objectives can include:

  • Combat against waves of enemies
  • Putting out fires using buckets of water
  • Leading panicked horses to safety
  • Tracking an NPC across a zone
  • Boss fights

Difficulty in ESO Dynamic Encounters scales with the number of players in the area. Scaling is per-encounter and does not just increase the amount of enemies.

ESO Dynamic Encounters Rewards

ESO Dynamic Encounters drop chests at different points: mid-stage chests and a completion chest at the end. The mid-stage chest exists so players who joined for a short duationcan still grab a reward for the part they participated in.

Confirmed Dynamic Encounters rewards:

  • Collectible fragments for a Rogue's Refuge house, fully earnable in-game with no Crown Store purchase required
  • An armor set tied to the system
  • Consumables and general loot

Rewards are designed to rotate over time so encounters do not become a one-and-done grind. Different runs drop different consumables and items, encouraging you to revisit each Dynamic Encounter regularly.

The Three Launch ESO Dynamic Encounters

Three Dynamic Encounters are available when the system launches in ESO Season One. Each is set in a different overland zone and varies in size and theme.

Auridon: A Burning Farm

The Auridon Dynamic Encounter is the smallest of the three. Bandits have set fire to a farm and trapped horses inside. Stages include fighting off the bandits, putting out fires with water buckets, leading scared horses to a corral and a final boss fight against a named enemy. This is a shorter encounter built as a fun distraction for ESO players passing through the zone.

Stonefalls: Little Red Riddlethor

The Stonefalls Dynamic Encounter is a Khajiit werewolf themed encounter called Little Red Riddlethar. The naming nods to the classic Little Red Riding Hood story, with a Khajiit twist fitting the ESO setting. Full stage details have not yet been revealed.

Glenumbra: Hunting a Vampire Lord

The Glenumbra Dynamic Encounter is the largest of the three. Players start in one part of the zone and follow an NPC across the area, dealing with the schemes of a vampire lord before tracking them down and finishing them off. This Dynamic Encounter traverses a significant portion of Glenumbra and is the biggest of the three launch options.

ESO Dynamic Encounters Are an Expanding System

The Season One release is the first iteration of Dynamic Encounters in ESO. The underlying tech and framework are built to support more encounters in future seasons, retrofitted into existing zones rather than tied to brand new areas. The system also expands into Season Two with Large-Scale World Events in Skyrim.
