Why You Should Attack Enemies from Behind in ESO

Why You Should Attack Enemies from Behind in ESO

If you are a newer player in the Elder Scrolls Online then you might not have known that it's actually very important to attack some enemies from the back or from the flank. This especially applies to bosses, but it also applies to some "trash" enemies in dungeons and trials too. But why is this the case?

Why attacking from behind is important in ESO

If you only ever play solo, then none of this will really apply to you, as most enemies are going to face you anyway. This information is also of limited application in PvP, only really being relevant for Nightblade gank builds.

But generally speaking, there are two main reasons why you should attack from the rear or from the flank in ESO.

The first reason is one of safety - in group content, a tank who knows what they are doing will always face enemies away from the other members of the group. This is because many enemies have a "cleave" attack, in other words an AOE that only hits players in front of them. This can hit non tank players quite hard, so you should stay behind the enemies and just let the tank take this damage. This isn't the only reason that tanks position enemies like this though, and that brings us onto the second reason.

You should also attack target dummies from behind for maximum damageYou should also attack target dummies from behind for maximum damageOne of the most important Champion Points for DPS players in ESO is the Backstabber CP. This CP increases your critical damage against enemies by 10% when you are attacking from the rear or the flank. This is pretty much a free damage boost when you are using this CP. Another thing to note here is that if things remain unchanged in the next major patch (Lost Depths), the Surprise Attack skill for Nightblades will guarantee a critical strike, making for an especially powerful synergy with the Backstabber CP.

This stuff is pretty much DPS 101, so if you are newer to group content in the Elder Scrolls Online, then hopefully you found this information useful.
