The Maelstrom Destruction Staff is Bugged in ESO

The Maelstrom Destruction Staff is Bugged in ESO

Yesterday, the Lost Depths DLC and update for the Elder Scrolls Online released on PC and Mac. A bug from the PTS has unfortunately made it into the game on the live server, which is quite a big deal for many magicka DPS players in ESO.

The bug is to do with the Maelstrom Destruction Staves (also known as the Crushing Wall set), a commonly used arena weapon that buffs your Wall of Elements skill.

Maelstrom Staves Bugged in ESO

Since Maelstrom Staves were introduced, there has been one aspect to their functionality that ensured they remained quite powerful. The bonus to the Wall of Elements skill granted by Maelstrom Staves ordinarily continues to apply to the skill after bar-swapping, as long as you cast it when you were on that staff's bar, even though after bar-swapping the item is technically no longer equipped, or at least not active.

This incentivized DPS players to build their skill rotations around recasts of the Wall of Elements DoT.

However, it has been pointed out that this functionality is missing from the staff now since the update - the bonus currently only applies when you are on the same bar where your Maelstrom Staff is equipped, which substantially limits the effectiveness of these weapons.

Other Combat Bugs in Lost Depths

The Maelstrom Staff problem isn't the only thing that's gone wrong. There are a few other notable combat bugs too.

For example, the Oakensoul Ring loses the Empower buff after you die, and you have to unequip and reequip the item to get it back. The duration of Elemental Blockade also does not line up to the value that was expected based on the PTS patch notes.

Zenimax reworked aspects of ESO's combat several times over the course of the PTS cycle, which probably explains how these bugs made it into the live version of the game - it's probable that they simply ran out of time to get everything working as planned. There's nothing game breaking here though, you can simply avoid the affected items until the bugs are fixed.
