Huge Combat Changes Coming to ESO in the Lost Depths Update

This week is seeing some big news coming out for the Elder Scrolls Online. Yesterday the new Lost Depths DLC and update was announced, and today several major changes to how the combat will work in ESO have been revealed.

Today we will summarize these changes.

Changes to Weaving in ESO Lost Depths

While the PTS Patch Notes for Lost Depths have not yet been released, meaning we are unable to give precise numerical values for the changes to the various different skills in the game, what we do have is an announcement by Gilliam from the ESO developer team, posted on the official ESO Forums earlier today. This is a lengthy post going over what new changes we can expect, and the reasons for them.

The first change is to light and heavy attacks. The most skillful players in the Elder Scrolls Online are able to get more damage from their build by "weaving" a light or heavy attack in between each cast of a skill. When done correctly, this makes up a very significant portion of players' DPS. However the developers of ESO are unhappy with how much this punishes players who struggle with light attack weaving, and as a result they have decided to remove the damage scaling from light and heavy attacks, instead assigning them a flat damage value. Presumably armor penetration will still buff the amount of damage your light and heavy attacks do to a target, but we cannot confirm this right now based on the available information.

Weaving has long been a controversial topic in the ESO community, with many end game players being quite fond of it, while some other players insisted that it is an unintended flaw in the ESO combat system that the developers allowed people to exploit. This is sure to provoke fresh reaction and debate on the topic, but it of course remains to be seen if Zenimax will go back on these plans if it seems the majority of players don't like them.

Changes to Damage and Healing Over Time Abilities

Continuing with the theme of making the game's combat less punishing for players with a lower "Actions per Minute", the duration of damage and healing over time effects that currently last for 10 seconds is apparently going to be increased to 20 seconds.

In addition to the duration being increased, the overall DPS contribution of damage over time skills is going to be reduced so that the DPS gap between players who can manage a complicated rotation and those who can't is not as pronounced.

Healing over time abilities will also have their power reduced so they do not become too overpowered in PvP scenarios due to the decreased DoT damage, however the idea is that this nerf won't be so great that it significantly impacts healers in PvE scenarios.

Damage Over Time skills like Burning Embers may soon become weakerDamage Over Time skills like Burning Embers may soon become weakerThese changes, especially the changes with weaving, are pretty much guaranteed to be controversial. Some players will be happy to see actions being taken to make combat mechanics more accessible in ESO, while others will no doubt argue that a large gap in performance between players of different skill levels is fine, as it incentivises improvement and rewards players who put in the time and effort to master the core combat mechanics of the game.
