ESO has been one of the top games on the Steam platform for a long time. Lets take a look at the official Steam numbers for ESO. Quick reminder, this is only Steam data, their own PC Launcher and Console data isn't reflected on the Steam data page. ESO launched lots of DLC over the years and continues to do so.
Steam Top Sellers List
Lets first take a look at the global Steam Top Sellers Page. ESO is ranked number 12 on the top sellers list with a crazy 401 weeks streak (almost 8 years). To compare this to other games, the only other games that have more weeks in the top 100 are:
- Counter Strike (529 weeks)
- Warframe (430 weeks)
- Grand Theft Auto V (402 weeks)
- Elder Scrolls Online (401 weeks)
- Rust (379 weeks)
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege (359 weeks)
These are all the games that have a streak of over 300 in the top 100 list. In the image below you can see that ESO (The Elder Scrolls Online) is on rank 12 with a streak of 401 weeks.

Most Played List
Next up we have the Most Played Steam Games list. Here we have two metrics that we can check out, current players and daily players.
ESO ranks the following:
- Current Players: Rank 70 with 9203 current players and a peak of 17577
- Daily Players: Rank 98 with 17577 players
Of course these numbers go up and down a lot. We can look at ESO Steamcharts which tracks player numbers. Here we do get a better picture of how ESO performs in terms of player numbers. Please keep in mind, this is only for Steam, players that play via the separate PC Launcher and Console numbers aren't included. However, this will still give us a good idea of where ESO is heading.
Lets take a look at the peak players per year according to the Steamcharts, please keep in mind that the peak almost never occurs in the same month over the years:
- 2014 - 3107 (July)
- 2015 - 7279 (December)
- 2016 - 29305 (November)
- 2017 - 29979 (April)
- 2018 - 29547 (August)
- 2019 - 32498 (May)
- 2020 - 49061 (April)
- 2021 - 43272 (April)
- 2022 - 34533 (January)
The first big spike of players happend between 2015 and 2016. In October 2016 the game had a peak player count of 6653 and the following month November it jumped to 29305. Many can probably guess it, this is when ONE TAMRIEL was released. One Tamriel brought huge changes to ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) and was seen as the "gamechanger". You can read more on what changed with One Tamriel here.
Afterwards it maintained the playerbase for a long time until ESO got another big spike in peak player numbers in 2020. In March 2020 the game had a peak player count of 25432, the following month in April it peaked at 49061. And yes, that is when COVID hit the world with lockdowns and many turned to gaming.
After two years of lockdown ESO is sort of back where we were pre-pandemic in terms of peak player numbers. Meaning most of the new entries throughout the pandemic didn't stay with ESO.

Is ESO dead?
At this point it should be pretty obvious that ESO isn't dead. While most of the new players that joined during the COVID pandemic left again, it managed to keep steady with player numbers and revenue. We can see that the game isn't really growing, but neither is it declining when we "remove" the two pandemic years from the stats. Most games saw a huge spike in player numbers during COVID, this wasn't unique to ESO. Neither was the decline in players after the pandemic slowed down.
The only question that remains is: What do the ESO devs have to do to get out of the stagnating player numbers. Do they have to release a new class to generate hype? Players love creating their own builds in ESO.
Please keep in mind, these are only Steam numbers. We don't have any data on their separate PC Launcher and Consoles. We started looking into this after we saw a tweet of Benji-Sales on Twitter regarding the numbers of ESO.
