Sharp-as-Night Companion Guide for ESO

 header

With Update 30, in mid June of 2021, ZOS added a new ESO Companion System. These are NPCs that will travel alongside the player and will be a companion that can tank, dps or heal.

In the Necrom Chapter in June 2023, Zenimax added two new companions to the game for owners of the new chapter. One of these new companions is Sharp-as-Night.

Sharp-as-Night is a Warden, meaning he possesses abilities similar to the Warden class. However the companion versions of abilities tend to differ a bit from the versions that players use. Sharp-as-Night is an Argonian.

Sharp-as-Night can help any player defeat more difficult enemies and especially newer players have an opportunity to pick up bigger challenges, without having to ask others.

Also, if the group is a player short, Sharp-as-Night can replace a group member. Meaning if they want to go into a 4-player dungeon and they are only 3 people, someone can summon Sharp-as-Night and the group will be full. Sharp-as-Night won’t be able to do complex mechanics, though, so he might not always be favored over other players.

It is also not possible to summon Sharp-as-Night while in combat, however you can unsummon him while in combat. He will not be able to be summoned in PvP instances, in single player arenas or in housing instances. Also, in instances where you can’t navigate to Sharp-as-Night and talk to him, he will be briefly invisible, such as while swimming.

At this point in time you cannot romance Sharp-as-Night.

Please note that some sections of this guide are still a Work in Progress, and will be updated closer to the Necrom release date.

Sharp-as-Night - Rapport and Approval or Disapproval

The rapport shows your relationship status with Sharp-as-Night. It can range from extreme contempt to viewing the player as their greatest ally and dearest friend. The player can decrease and increase the rapport via their in-game actions. Different actions have different cooldowns, so that rapport can not be positively or negatively influenced too many times in rapid succession.

Sharp-as-Night Personal Quests

Sharp-As-Night has three Personal Quests that you can complete after recruiting him. However these will not be available right away. When you increase your Rapport with Sharp to a certain point, he will come to you and ask for help, and you can begin the next quest.

These quests allow you to learn more about Sharp-As-Night and his backstory, and completing all of them is a requirement for earning Sharp's keepsake item.

Sharp-As-Night has the following personal quests available:

  • Between a Rock and a Whetstone
  • Dim and Distant Pasts
  • Light the Way to Freedom

Sharp-as-Night Companion Skills

Each companion has a unique non-combat perk which benefits the player while active. For Sharp-As-Night, this Perk is called Sharp's Patience, and it will increase the bite rate of fish while you are fishing, and increase the chance that fish you catch will be Trophy Fish. This makes Sharp the perfect Companion to have if you want to get Master Fisher or other angling achievements.

Ordinarily, you need to have Sharp-As-Night summoned to benefit from this perk, however you can get it personally by completing all Achievements related to Sharp, leveling him to max level and maxing out his Rapport with you.

Sharp-as-Night has the skills of a Warden, meaning many of his abilities will be similar to players of that class.

He has the following three class skill-lines:

  • Beasts of the Hunt - Similar to the Animal Companions skill line that Warden players have access to. Allows Sharp to summon various beasts to deal damage to enemies.
  • Verdant Growth - Similar to the Green Balance skill line that Warden players have access to. These skills are focused around healing Sharp and his allies.
  • Winter's Bite - Similar to the Winter's Embrace skill line that Warden players have access to. These skills are a mixture of damage, healing and mitigation spells, but by and large they're mostly focused around improving the survivability of Sharp and his allies.

Sharp-as-Night - How to Get Him

In order to recruit Sharp-as-Night, you will need to own the Necrom Chapter.

You then need to complete an introductory quest where you will meet Sharp-as-Night and help him out, and in return he will offer to join you on your own adventures.

For more info about how to unlock Sharp-As-Night, please check our detailed guide for how to unlock Sharp-As-Night.

Sharp-as-Night - How to Summon Him

Once you have completed Sharp-as-Night's initial quest and recruited him, he will start following the player and will be available by either choosing him from the Collections menu, or by quickslotting him via the Quickslot inventory.

His collectible can be found in the “Allies” section. It is not possible to have multiple Allies or Assistants active at the same time, such as a banker and a companion.

Sharp-as-Night's Menu can be accessed when talking to him.

The first page is an overview, showing the Combat Level of Sharp-as-Night, as well as whether he is wearing an outfit and if so, which. The next item is Sharp-as-Night’s ability bar. He has 5 skill slots plus an Ultimate slot, which will progressively unlock as his Combat Level increases.

The 5 skill slots also act as a priority system - Sharp-as-Night will prioritize using a skill in slot 1 over a skill in slot 2, and so forth. Each Companion skill has a cooldown, which prevents him from simply spamming the highest priority skill, however.

The next section of the menu is the Rapport. This shows what Sharp-as-Night thinks about the player and whether he is more likely to engage cordially with the player. When Sharp-as-Night trusts you enough, he may ask for help with a personal quest which you can complete for an extra rapport boost.

The player can also access his equipment from here, which they have to carry in their inventory in order to have him equip it.

Sharp-as-Night - Rewards

By fully completing all Achievements related to Sharp-As-Night, you can unlock his keepsake, a collectible item that gives you access to his unique Perk at all times, even when he is not summoned.

This keepsake is Sharp's Catch-All Fishing Lure, and it will increase the rate at which fish bite, and increase the chance of it being a Trophy Fish. This is useful if you fish a lot, and especially useful if you're trying to get the Master Fisher achievement.

To unlock this keepsake, you'll need to complete the following tasks and achievements:

  • Sharp's Companion - Complete all quests related to Sharp-As-Night
  • Sharp's Favor - Increase rapport with Sharp by completing specific tasks at their side.
  • Summon Sharp at Max Level
  • Obtain max Rapport with Sharp.

Sharp-as-Night Skills

In order to access the skills menu for Sharp-as-Night, speak to him to bring up the Companion Menu, then select the skills tab - the second icon on the top-right.

All available skill lines are listed here, with the three Class skill lines at first, followed by the Weapon skill lines. The player has to equip a weapon first before it can unlock. The Class Skill lines increase with the combat level of Sharp-as-Night.

Same goes to the Armor skill line. 3 items of the same weight have to be equipped in order for the skill line to be equipped. Weapon and Armor skill lines all increase through combat experience based on what the player carries.

The Guild skill lines are almost identical to the player Guild skill lines, only that there’s only Fighters Guild, Mages Guild and Undaunted available so far. They increase through completing specific solo daily quests associated with the guild, for the active companion.

There’s also only 1 Racial trait available which will be available from the beginning and won’t need to be unlocked.

To find out how to find and complete the Guild daily quests to level up Sharp-as-Night's Guild skill lines, check out this guide to Guild Dailies. You can also purchase Fighters and Mages Guild Commendations from the Impresario during in-game in events to immediately level up one of Sharp-as-Night's guild skill lines.

Sharp-as-Night does not have Champion Points.

Sharp-as-Night - Equipment

In Sharp-as-Night's Companion Menu, on the first page on the left side the Equipment menu is available.

A player has to carry the equipment they want Sharp-as-Night to wear in their inventory.

Sharp-as-Night has the same equipment slots as the player, except for only being able to slot one weapon set, as he only has one ability bar. The quality of the equipment ranges from normal to legendary, and some equipment has traits that buff the companion a little. Companion gear traits are different to player equipment traits.

A player will not be able to craft Sharp-as-Night gear, but will have to find the equipment. Sharp-as-Night's equipment does not include a level, cannot be enchanted, does not require repairs and does not include an inherent style appearance, but instead inherits Sharp-as-Night's style.

White (basic) quality companion equipment can be purchased from Weaponsmith, Woodworker, Armorer, Leatherworker, and Tailor merchants throughout the world. Higher quality gear needs to be looted, and drops most often from bosses and chests. Companion equipment can also be traded, so it can be found in Guild Stores too.

The available traits for Companion Gear are as follows:

  • Aggressive - Increases Sharp-as-Night's damage output (per equipped piece).
  • Augmented - Increases the duration of all Sharp-as-Night's buffs and debuffs (per equipped piece).
  • Bolstered - Reduces the Damage Taken by Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Focused - Increases the Critical Strike Rating of Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Prolific- Increases the Ultimate regeneration of Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Quickened- Reduces the Ability cooldown of Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Shattering - Increases the Penetration of Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Soothing - Increases the Healing Done by Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).
  • Vigorous - Increases the Maximum Health of Sharp-as-Night (per equipped piece).

Sharp-as-Night - Customization

Speak to Sharp-as-Night to initiate a conversation and you can select the Companion Menu option. From here you can choose two different customizations. At the very first character sheet on the right side, underneath the Combat Level, is the Outfit.

Here the player can choose between No Outfit and Companion Outfit. If the player decides to go with No Outfit, the current equipment that Sharp-as-Night is wearing will be displayed.

If a player wants to have a costume that they own worn by Sharp-as-Night, they have to choose the Collectibles icon on the top right. Here a player can also choose one of their mounts for Sharp-as-Night to use.

In order to have their own customized Outfit displayed, the player needs to go to an Outfit Station that is not in a player’s house (because Sharp-as-Night needs to be active at the time of customization). In the Outfit Station menu, the player can choose between themselves and Sharp-as-Night. From here it works the same as with a player Outfit. You can also choose colors for both the Outfit or a Costume at this station.

The head armor will be hidden at all times and will not be displayed regardless of equipment or cosmetic override settings. Depending on gender, race or other restrictions, some of the player’s cosmetics might also not be usable by companions. Players can’t equip polymorphs, personalities, skins, hats, hair or tattoos on their companions.
