Why do tanks and healers use a destruction staff in ESO?

If you are a newer player in the Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), you might have wondered why it's common for support roles (tanks and healers) to run a Destruction Staff. This weapon actually has a couple of skills that are very useful for supporting your team, something which is at the core of what tanks and healers do in this game. So in this article we will summarize what these skills are and why they are useful.
Elemental Drain for support roles in ESO
Elemental Drain is the main skill that makes destruction staff useful for healers in ESO. It can also be used by tanks in some situations, particularly when there is no healer present like in the Cloudrest portal. This skill applies Major Breach to enemies which reduces their armor by a big chunk, and most importantly applies Minor Magickasteal which is very useful for helping members of the team to keep their Magicka pool from running too low - especially for magicka damage dealers.
Elemental Blockade for support roles in ESO
Elemental Blockade, while also being a strong AOE skill for damage dealers, is very useful for tanks. In the case of tanks, it's not used for its damage output but is used to activate a crushing enchantment on cooldown to reduce the armor of the boss. It's best used with an Infused frost staff on your backbar. The frost staff comes with extra armor making it perfect for tanks, and also has the added effect of casting a shield on your allies that will protect them from projectiles. You can use flame or shock staves instead, these will be just as good at debuffing enemies but will not give you buffs to your own survivability.
Crushing Shock for support roles in ESO
This is something that can also apply to DPS players, but normally they are using Force Pulse which does more damage than Crushing Shock. Crushing Shock is useful because it allows you to interrupt enemies from range. It's normally the tank's job to interrupt bosses by bashing them, however if you're in a position where a bash is not possible, Crushing Shock will allow you to do it from range instead.
