Five Popular MMO Features that Might Work in Elder Scrolls Online

Five Popular MMO Features that Might Work in Elder Scrolls Online
In a recent thread on the ESO Forums, Elder Scrolls Online players have been discussing some features from other MMO games that they would like to see in ESO. Some of these are ideas that have cropped up repeatedly for quite a long time now and continue to be popular.

In this article we will look at five of the most popular ideas and think about how they might fit into ESO.

A Central Auction House for Trading

This is something that has been talked about for a long time in the ESO community. While many players are fine with the current Guild Trader system, there are also a numerous amount of players who would prefer a more centralized “auction house” where players can easily buy and sell items without needing to be in a guild or having to browse through several different guild traders to find what they are looking for.

I personally don’t mind which system we have, however I don’t think that a switch to a central auction house will happen anytime soon, if at all, firstly because at this point Guild Traders are just an integral part of player guilds, their purpose and their identity in ESO, and secondly because there is already “too much” gold on some ESO servers due to a lack of gold-sinks, which has led to inflation and very high prices.

Removing one of the only gold sinks, the fee required to hire a guild trader, is most likely going to make this problem even worse, and it’s something that has a much harsher impact on newer players who don’t have much gold or many ways to earn it besides getting small amounts from questing and loot.

It also has to be noted that services like Tamriel Trade Center have made the decentralized Guild Trader system easier to use, as one can quickly search all traders on their server for the item they want and find the best deal.

More Earnable Cosmetics, Mounts and Pets

There are many cosmetic items in the Elder Scrolls Online. However, with the exception of Style Motifs, there aren’t many that can be earned by just playing the game. It is quite a common proposal from players that Zenimax should add a wider variety of mounts, pets and costumes that we can obtain in-game by completing various dungeons, trials and achievements, instead of just putting most of them in the Crown Store.

There was a small step in this direction from ZOS, when they introduced the Endeavour system, allowing players to complete simply daily tasks in exchange for Seals, which they could save up over time to eventually spend on a Crown Crate item. The problem with this system is that it takes such an obscene amount of time to save up enough Seals of Endeavor to buy mounts, for example, that by the time you have enough it won’t be in the store anymore.

I don’t think that anyone would complain about being able to earn some thematic cosmetic items from in-game content, and it would likely help to garner more interest in certain aspects of the game too, such as end game PvE. If Zenimax ever does something like this, then I hope they don’t forget to add some stuff for PvP players to get, too.

More “Barber Shop” options

The Elder Scrolls Online has a barber shop of sorts, where you can change your hairstyle, adornments and facial markings via the Collectibles menu, however if you want to make more major changes than that, you have to purchase an Appearance Change Token from the Crown Store.

Some players have been asking for more of a compromise in this area, most notably the option to change your character’s hair color or “dye” their hair without needing to buy one of these tokens.

Farming

Similar to how in Skyrim’s Hearthfire DLC you can plant, grow and harvest alchemy plants in your garden, many players think it would be cool if you could also do this in ESO. It would definitely add another useful element to housing in the Elder Scrolls Online.

However, it has to be noted that a large part of the game’s economy revolves around buying and selling crafting materials, including alchemy reagents, so a system like this would need to be implemented carefully to avoid messing with the economy too much. A feature like this would definitely be helpful to players who don’t have the time to farm a lot of alchemy reagents or can’t afford to buy them, though.

Sailing

ESO has plenty of water areas, and at this point the majority of Tamriel’s coastline has been filled in with playable areas. Given the maritime theme of the upcoming High Isle chapter and the wider Legacy of the Bretons storyline, this would perhaps be a good time for something like this to be implemented, perhaps with an added treasure hunting or fishing mechanic to make it more than just a new means of travel.

It would certainly create a lot of work for Zenimax to implement this, as currently water in ESO is little more than a flat area with a texture on it that kills you with Slaughterfish if you go too far away from where you’re “supposed” to be, but it’s not completely beyond the realms of possibility.
