Yesterday's Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase included a multitude of titles such as A Plague Tale: Requiem, Forza and Diablo 4. The showcase finished up with a gameplay reveal for Bethesda's long-awaited and highly anticipated open-world science fiction title, Starfield. Starfield was originally set to release this year, but after a delay until at least 2023, this was the first real chance we've had to see the game in action. A range of features of the game were revealed by Todd Howard during the showcase. From what we saw, the game seems to be a splicing together of No Man's Sky and Fallout 4.

You can view the Gameplay Reveal for yourself here:

Massive Open World Exploration

One of the most ambitious promises made in the gameplay reveal was that players will be able to explore around 1,000 different planets, and you can land anywhere on any of these planets without being restricted to a particular playable area. One assumes that this is accomplished with some blend of procedural generation for the majority of the planet surface, with hand crafted areas for the cities and other notable locations. You can fly between planets in your ship, meaning that space and planet exploration works in a similar way to No Man's Sky.

Ship Customization

You will be able to customize your ship with various different modules, and different color schemes for these modules too. It remains to be seen how deep this will go particularly in relation to the combat ability of a ship. We do know that space combat will be a thing, as there was a section of the gameplay reveal showing this off specifically.

Character Customization

Starfield promises the most detailed character customization in a Bethesda game so far. The system aims to combine the best parts of character creation in previous games, with extensive options for the visual appearance of your character as well as choosing various specialisations and traits to further tailor your character to fit your preferences or roleplay ideas.

There will also be a skill leveling system, with players being able to obtain perks and then upgrade them by completing various challenges.

Base Building

You will be able to build bases, or outposts, on planets in any location you want. These outposts can be used as a simple home, or further developed to generate resources for your benefit. You will also be able to recruit NPCs who you have met on your travels to keep the base operational while you are away.

What can we expect for the future?

We don't have a precise release date for Starfield yet, with the somewhat vague window of “the first half of 2023” being the best we can hope for at the moment.

The game looks to be pretty ambitious, so maybe it is good that Bethesda are taking their time with it - a tidy release would do the reputation of Bethesda a world of good at a time when many franchises seem to be plagued with overambitious launch schedules and resultant post-launch backlashes.
