It's probably fair to say that the launch of Update 36 and the Firesong DLC hasn't quite gone according to plan, with many players having problems with crashes, at least some of which could be mitigated by disabling addons.
However it seems that tanks have it especially bad at the moment - something has gone wrong with blocking, causing many tanks to struggle to stay alive in boss fights.
So what's going on here, and is there a fix on the horizon?
What's Up with Blocking in ESO?
Since the Firesong DLC and accompanying Update 36, tanks began experiencing some issues with block, and some took to the official ESO Forums to report what was going wrong.
According to one user, dodge rolling and casting skills such as Dragon Blood and Igneous Shield would cause the tank to stop blocking, needing to be manually reapplied each time. In the case of dodge rolling, it's normal that your block is dropped when you are dodging, but your character should automatically start blocking again as long as you keep the block button held, but this is not happening currently.
Other players on the thread were reporting that the effects of stuns and knockbacks from mobs and bosses were applying to their character even when they were blocking, which is also not something that should happen in most cases.
It seems a bit strange that so many issues arose in a patch where not much seemed to have been changed, at least going by the patch notes, but we can surmise that work must've been done behind the scenes on some code for so many things to unexpectedly break.
There's been no official news yet of when this is going to be fixed, but due to the severe impact that it's likely to have on a lot of players and groups, it seems likely that it will be high on Zenimax's priority list and fixed in the next incremental patch, which will come to PC next week.
In the meantime, if you are in a dungeon or a trial and your tank is dying a lot, then it might be worth remembering that they are currently dealing with a lot of extra problems that make their job harder than usual.
Hopefully this will be fixed soon (along with the remaining crashes) and we can all get back to normal.
