How Do Pets' Damage Scale in the Elder Scrolls Online? - ESO

How does the attack damage of pets, including Sorcerer pets, scale in ESO?

The damage scaling of abilities in the Elder Scrolls Online can be a source of confusion and uncertainty for newer players, and returning players too, as this is something that has changed quite a bit over the past year or so.

One thing that can be especially confusing at first glance is how the damage of summoned pets (such as the Sorcerer pets) scales and what players can do to improve their pets' combat effectiveness.

How do Pets' Attacks Scale in ESO?

Fortunately the answer is fairly simple; the attack damage caused by summoned pets will scale based on either your own weapon damage or spell damage, depending on which value is higher. Pets do not have their own attack scaling, it is simply derived from your own.

Note that your Max Stamina or Max Magicka value also influences your damage output, a portion of those values is added to the tooltip value for abilities including pets, so having high magicka or stamina also helps to increase how much damage your pets will do.

This helps to make pets viable for both magicka and stamina builds, as while the pets are magicka abilities, their damage can be based on your weapon damage if that value is higher than your spell damage.

This is in contrast to how ESO used to work, where each ability scaled from either weapon or spell damage and stayed that way, with only a few exceptions.

Pet abilities in ESO include Summon Volatile Familiar, Summon Unstable Clannfear and Eternal Guardian.
