It's now almost four years since the newest playable class, the Necromancer, was added to ESO, as a part of the Elsweyr Expansion.
Since then players have been expectantly waiting for another new class with every subsequent expansion, but up until now have been disappointed each time.
With such a long time having elapsed since the Necromancer was added, it certainly seems more likely than ever that a new class will be added during this year's expansion, but nothing is certain. However it's possible we will learn more this month, as the Global Reveal event for the upcoming year's content theme should be happening at some point in January, possibly within the next couple of weeks.
As to what the new class could be, that's currently up for debate as well. Common ideas that I've seen are Battlemage and Monk, but until something concrete is announced by Zenimax (or there's a very solid leak) there's not much we can do other than speculate.
What Implications Would a New Class Have?
When a new class is added to ESO it tends to boost the player count, as quite a few people who don't play much ESO anymore come back to the game to try out the new class for themselves.
New classes also tend to shake up group play across both PvE and PvP, creating new builds, new group compositions and often new metas. Zenimax will probably want to be wary of overdoing any potential new class however, as was arguably the case when the Necromancer first released, with a very strong version of the Major Vulnerability debuff that caused Necromancers to pretty much take over all optimised PvE groups.
This debuff is of course still important to group play in both PvE and PvP to this day, however it's not as strong as it used to be and there are now other reliable ways to get the debuff besides the Necromancer, such as the Turning Tide and Archdruid Devyric sets.
It has to be noted that ESO's player count is gradually declining according to Steam Charts, and it seems that one of the simplest ways that Zenimax could counteract this is by releasing a new class. So for that reason and the fact that it's simply been so long since the previous one came out, it wouldn't be at all surprising if this is the year when we finally see something new on that front.
