The newest batch of Crown Crates hit the ESO Crown Store last Thursday. The Ragebound Crown Crates are primarily themed around the Reach, offering a selection of mounts, costumes, housing items and more.
However there is something else that came out alongside the Ragebound Crown Crates that has got players' attention, and not in a positive way it seems. We are of course talking about the new Shade Polymorph.
Why Players are Unhappy about the Shade Polymorph in ESO
The problem doesn't lie with the Shade polymorph itself. For the most part players who bought it seem perfectly happy with the item. What's got people's feathers ruffled is the way Zenimax have decided to sell the polymorph.
Currently the only way to obtain the Shade Polymorph is to purchase it bundled with 25 Ragebound Crown Crates, which will set you back 8,000 Crowns.
If you are interested in buying Crown Crates, then this is actually a fairly good deal, offering you considerably better value than if you were to buy 15 Crown Crates, ordinarily the largest pack available. But for everyone else it simply makes the costume either very expensive, or simply unattainable.
There's naturally been quite a bit of fallout over this on the ESO Forums, with numerous players voicing their disapproval. These opinions can be found in several different forum threads, such as this one.
The unhappy players are essentially indicating that they have no interest in Crown Crates and will not buy the Shade for this price, but otherwise would have bought it if it was sold by itself for a normal price tag.
It is of course difficult to judge from these reactions alone exactly what proportion of ESO players are unhappy with the situation, but there is certainly quite a bit of discontent being voiced about the topic.
In addition, this situation has been made a little bit worse by a bug that's currently affecting the Crown Store, preventing players from gifting Crown Crates to other players (essentially making it impossible to buy them with gold, as many players are used to doing).
This has even led to some conspiracy theories on the forums, with a couple of people suggesting that the gifting may have been disabled on purpose to test how many players would switch to buying the crates with Crowns rather than gold. However this doesn't seem to make much sense, as in the vast majority of cases the player selling the Crowns would have had to have bought them themselves, either with a Crown Pack or their ESO Plus Subscription. So in either case Zenimax would be getting money from the purchase, whether directly or indirectly.
In any case, this drama has overshadowed the release of the perhaps ironically named Ragebound Crown Crates, with the talk about the situation with the Shade polymorph drowning out most discussion about the Crates' contents themselves.
