Cyrodiil Has Started Lagging Again in ESO

Cyrodiil Has Started Lagging Again in ESO

A few weeks ago, Zenimax performed a hardware upgrade on the PC NA megaserver, which was purportedly only intended to prevent future hardware failures and resultant downtime, with no noticeable performance improvement expected by Zenimax. We wrote about this in more detail in this article

Soon after that maintenance, many PvP players had reported that the common lag problems that they had been used to in Cyrodiil had been solved or at least improved, contrary to what Zenimax said we should expect. This had led to much excitement among players on other megaservers who are expecting a hardware refresh to take place at some point in the future.

However according to the most recent reports on the topic, it seems that these performance improvements might have been short lived.

Is Lag Returning to Cyrodiil on PC NA?

Over the last week or two, more and more reports have begun to surface on the Official ESO Forums that the lag has once again reared its head in Cyrodiil on PC NA.

Naturally, players involved in these discussions were expressing their concerns that PvP could be about to die again, before its new lease of life had really even got going. Some players were urging Zenimax to investigate and reverse whatever had caused the downturn in performance.

With several PvP streamers and old time players of the Alliance War making a return, or planning to do so soon in light of the previous performance improvements, for the first time in a long while it looked like Cyrodiil might have a healthy future in the Elder Scrolls Online. So the worry is that the downturn might make returning PvP players even more disillusioned than they were when they initially left.

Siege Combat in ESO CyrodiilSiege Combat in ESO CyrodiilZenimax did not officially acknowledge the initial improvements to performance after the hardware improvements, and they haven't commented on the reported downturn in performance yet either.

This left some players speculating among themselves about what the cause of the latest performance troubles might be. One of the most common theories was that an influx of returning players may have increased the load on the servers, and the other common theory is that players are becoming more inclined to form "ball groups" (tightly packed groups who spam heals and buffs on each other for protection, which are also notorious for causing performance problems) to protect themselves from the increased power of skilled players on "bomb builds" who were seemingly liberated from lag.

Whatever the cause is, hopefully these incidents were just a temporary blip. It really would be a shame if the road to recovery for ESO's open world PvP were to be blocked so quickly.
