Is the ESO Whitestrake's Mayhem Event Unfair for PvE Players?

The Whitestrake's Mayhem Event in ESO, previously known as Midyear Mayhem, often brings about a disagreement on platforms like the ESO Forums and Reddit between PvE and PvP players. This disagreement mostly revolves around whether or not it is fair that PvE players have to get involved with PvP to earn Event Tickets during the event.

The Whitestrake's Mayhem Debate

This disagreement has played out several times over the past week or so in threads like this one on the ESO Forums.

Some PvE players have argued that it is unfair that they are forced to partake in PvP, mostly because they feel that they get ganked a lot by seasoned PvP players who are simply taking advantage of the event to farm inexperienced PvE players for Alliance Points and Tel Var Stones. A common idea that tends to be floated when Whitestrake's Mayhem is underway is that players should have the option of entering Cyrodiil as a "guest", basically making you unable to damage or be damaged by other players, and only able to participate in quests.

However PvP players often counter these ideas by pointing out that this is the only event which involves PvP, and that PvE players have plenty of other opportunities to get Event Tickets with other events throughout the year.

It is also often suggested to the PvE players that there are some ways around their troubles with getting the Event Tickets, such as joining a campaign with a low population and just doing the Scouting Quest to earn Event Tickets from Cyrodiil. The logic behind this is that you are less likely to encounter enemy players when you take this approach.

Is a Guest Mode in PvP a Good Idea?

If you go into ESO's PvP pretty blind, knowing little to nothing about it except that you can get Event Tickets by doing PvP quests, then it's not hard hard to foresee that you may have a pretty bad time of it, especially in the current meta with the gank playstyle being very powerful and very common due to items like the Oakensoul Ring and proc sets like Caluurion's Legacy. So it is understandable that some players may have such nasty first experiences of PvP that they find the prospect of being "forced" to partake in it to gain Event Tickets quite unfair, and are inclined to ask for a guest feature that allows them to avoid it entirely.

However implementing such a feature definitely doesn't come without its problems. The population of Cyrodiil is capped and players will often have to wait to join the campaign - it seems unfair to make players who want to go and do actual PvP wait around for longer because of people joining in this guest mode where they aren't going to even be a part of the PvP game at all. In my personal opinion it doesn't seem like a proportional response when there are lower-risk ways of earning the Event Tickets, like the Scouting Missions for example.

That is just my opinion though, of course some people won't agree with this and that's fine.

In any case, my suspicion is that Zenimax wants this event to get more players engaged with PvP to boost the population numbers and keep PvP game modes healthy, and for this reason I don't think they are likely to add a guest mode anytime soon. But only time will tell!
