The Feature of Character Skins in ESO that you Might Have Missed

In the Elder Scrolls Online, there are various collectible cosmetic items that you can unlock for your characters, such as skins, body markings and face markings. Some of these are unlocked by completing certain achievements, whereas others are purchased from the Crown Store.

Turns out it's possible to combine quite a lot of these together to make "custom" skins in a sense, although we are pretty sure that this hasn't always been the case and players that we've asked about it were also unaware that you could do this.

Combining Cosmetics in ESO

Not all of the skins can be combined with body and face markings. To explain this we first have to explain the way in which these cosmetics are layered when placed on your character. The body markings always make up the bottom layer, and if you have a skin on as well then this is placed on top of the body and face markings.

This means that skins that "paint" your character one solid color, for example the Dro-m'Athra skin, will just completely hide any body markings that you try to combine it with. Other skins like the Fabrication Sheath do not completely hide everything that is underneath them, so these ones can be combined with body and face markings.

You do have to do quite a bit of experimentation to get a result that makes some sense and doesn't just look like a jumble of random patterns.

One thing that I am not completely sure about though - is this even intended? The UI shows that the body markings are hidden by the skin, even though they are still visible on your character. So either they are not supposed to be visible or they just forgot to update the UI after they made this into a feature.
