ESO Chronological Timeline Guide - Best Way to Play the Story

Since 2021, the tutorial is a fixed place. Before that we would be able to experience a new tutorial with every new chapter, but in order to make it easier for players to choose where they start, ZOS decided that it would be best to offer a tutorial where you can choose at the end whereto you want to go.

The tutorial will lead you through the basics of the game, describing how to use skills, abilities and utility keys, so that you can play the game without too many obstacles.

At the end of the tutorial you will be able to choose from these gates, which will lead you to different places in Tamriel. The first three are the base game storyline, and the rest are access to the various DLCs that were former chapters, and the current chapter itself.

The following list shows where in the storyline you will enter. They are listed in the order they were released in ESO:

In order to start the game in chronological order, you have to know first which alliance you belong to. You can check this by pressing the key or button to open your character information screen. On PC this is by default C.

In the top left corner you can see which alliance you belong to, here you can see the symbol of the Aldmeri Dominion, the eagle. From there you can choose which portal you take. If you are part of the Daggerfall Covenant alliance you can choose the gate to Stros M'kai. If you are part of the Aldmeri Dominion alliance you can choose Khenarthi's Roost to start with. If you are Ebonheart Pact you will want to start with Bleakrock Isle.

All others are not recommended if you want to play the game in chronological order, as these start long after the story of the base game has taken place.
